1. Where we stand

Pakistan has fallen behind countries in the region, and around the world in serving its people’s needs

2. Inadequate governance

The government’s persistent failure to implement its plans or reforms damage the economy. There is no better example of this than the power sector

3. The Burden

Inefficient and ineffective government expenditure cripple Pakistan’s ability to provide its people the services that matter

4. Sovereign Pakistan

The government inability to collect taxes limits the possibilities for Pakistan to operate as a democratic and independent country

5. Growth

Nestled between China, India and the Middle East, Pakistan is in the world’s fastest growing regions. Growth from regional trade alone can add billions to the economy.

About

Economy Check Pakistan is an effort to inform the discussion about Pakistan's economy with data about some of the urgent issues facing the country.

Rather than advocating specific policy solutions to problems, the data here is meant to stimulate debate. As Pakistan decides on its budgetary priorities for 2011-2012, it is as good a time as any to reflect on the the economy.

This is a collaborative effort by economists and researchers. It is informed by data and inputs from a wide variety of organizations including the Jinnah Institute, the Pakistan Business Council, and a number of Pakistani government organizations as well as the United Kingdom's Department for International Development.

Feedback and comments will be collated and presented to the Government of Pakistan.
